Who We Are

We are two young teachers of English, born and raised in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece. The fact that we have been friends since high school and that we both continued our studies together in the English department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has contributed to providing us with a dream which became a shared goal: To spread love and inspiration through teaching, since education for us, among others, is connected to life skills acquisition, good habit formation and the development of the learner as a whole.

What does ''mathemou'' mean?

It is  common knowledge that literal translation is not possible and misunderstandings when it comes to translating are inevitable. However, let us try, to some extent, give you an insight into the reason for using “mathemou” as the name of our site: “Mathe” is the imperative form of the verb “mathainw”-“to learn”. In the ancient Greek language “mathainw” is connected to notions such as education, learning of a subject and acquisition of a skill. Also, it should be noted that “mathainw” is translated as -to teach somebody-. “Mou” stands for the object pronoun “me”. We consider having access to any kind of knowledge of unique value. For us, education is not what happens within the four classroom walls, but rather it is a holistic character formation through stimuli, either it’s people or situations around us. Education does not come through teaching and instructions. It comes through interaction and building connections with people.

What Inspires Us?

Our primary goal for constructing the present website was to build an educational community where one could be able to find any piece of knowledge for inside and outside class. In this site, you will find a variety of materials and resources, anything we consider to be of value for educators, students and anyone pursuing knowledge. It is all about what we have learnt, what we are learning and what we will need to discover. It is our common belief that knowledge should be shared among those who desire it since knowledge has value only when it is shared. Everything we have been taught, every single aspect that captured our senses and intrigued our mind throughout our academic path and many more is here.

The resources and teaching materials you will find in our website aim at a holistic approach of EFL. For us, teaching English is not merely about teaching grammar rules and sterile vocabulary lists but instead, it is about fostering a positive learning environment and preparing our students to become citizens of tomorrow.
